watch-out situations
fire a list of potential situations that may be unsafe for fire fighters in suppressing a forest fire —note the situations are as follows: the fire is not scouted and sized up; the fire is in country not seen in daylight; safety zones and escape routes are not identified; you are unfamiliar with weather and local factors influencing fire behavior; you are uninformed on strategy, tactics, and hazards; instructions and assignments are not clear; you have no communication link with crew members or your supervisor; you are constructing a line without a safe anchor point; you are building a fireline downhill with fire below; you are attempting frontal assault on the fire; there is unburned fuel between you and the fire; you cannot see the main fire and are not in contact with someone who can; you are on a hillside where rolling material can ignite fuel below; the weather is becoming hotter and drier; the wind increases or changes direction; there are frequent spot fires across the line; the terrain and fuels make escape to safety zones difficult; you are resting near the fireline —see standard firefighting ordersThis definition last updated 08/18/2008
